Import Mbox

Import Mbox

Mbox is a generic term for a family of related file formats used for holding collections of electronic mail messages. All messages in an mbox mailbox are concatenated and stored in a single file. The beginning of each message is indicated by a line whose first five characters are “From” and a blank line is
appended to the end of each message.

The Mbox import process can require a link to a network shared drive and three steps to move data into the appliance:

• Exmerge - Exmerge is a Microsoft Exchange utility that converts data from Exchange format into PST file format. See Microsoft Exchange documentation for instructions on running Exmerge.

• Conversion Utility - A conversion utility (supplied by ArcMail upon request) to convert the PST file format to Mbox format. See the conversion documentation that accompanies the utility for instructions on running the conversion utility.

• Defender Import - Mbox import to move data from Mbox files into the archive.
Note: Network storage is required for the Mbox conversion process. See Network Storage in the Configuration section of this guide for setup instructions if Network Storage has not been configured.

Procedure 1-11- Perform the following steps to Import an Mbox:
Step Action
1 Click the MESSAGE TOOLS icon.
2 Click Import Mbox.
3 Configure the following fields:

• Import directory - Use the drop-down list to select the import directory.
Files in this directory and its subdirectories are imported, optionally limited by the import extension field. This directory comes from the appliance mounted network storage.
• Import extension - Enter a filename extension to limit the import to files with the specified filename extension. Leave this field blank to import all files in the selected import directory.
Note: This field is optional.
• Domain for Exchange addresses - Enter the Exchange domain (company.com). This appends the configured domain name to any messages that do not have a domain name associated with the email address.
• Email address for results - Enter an email address to receive import result notification.
• Start date (yyyymmdd) - Enter a start date of messages to be imported.
Leave this field blank for no start date limit. This field is optional.
• End date (yyyymmdd) - Enter an end date of messages to be imported.
Leave this field blank for no end date limit. This field is optional.
Note: Changing the advanced settings are only needed for rare situations.
The default settings should be used for most imports.

4 Check the Show advanced settings checkbox to use the following advanced settings:

• Exchange X.500 address string - The Exchange X.500 address string sets a custom Exchange X.500 address string. Exchange uses a X.500-like address string internally. The default setting is the string Exchange uses in a default setup.
Note: Only change this string if a custom string is required.
• Delay between messages - Delay between messages sets the delay (in seconds) between each message that is imported into the appliance.
For example: A setting of 3 will cause the appliance to wait 3 seconds before importing the next message.
Use 0 for no delay between importing individual messages.

Note: Fractions of a second or decimal places may be used (1/2, 0.5).

• Maximum queue depth - Maximum queue depth sets the maximum depth of the import queue. If the queue is too large, there could be a significant delay in importing new archived emails in high traffic environments. Once the appliance reaches the maximum queue depth, it will throttle import of messages to sustain the maximum queue capacity until the import is complete.

5 Click Next. The appliance searches through the import directory and lists all available folders and files ready for import.
6 Click Import. The import process runs in the background. An email is sent to the email
address entered in the step above when the import process is complete.

Note: Use the Import Status screen (under ARCHIVE TOOLS) to
view import status information.
